Designer & maker of fine timber furniture
Neil Thomason designs and makes timber furniture. Simple, elegant, functional - these are the guiding design principles that drive each piece.Timber is a beautiful & precious natural resource, many trees taking decades or even centuries to mature. Neil brings a reverence for the material to each piece he works on, large or small. Natural oil finishes are used wherever possible, bringing out the most in the finished appearance of the timber.Employing traditional joinery methods and a preference for recycled or storm-fallen timber, the work takes place in a solar-powered workshop in the Central Victorian creative hub of Castlemaine.
About the maker
Neil grew up in Central Victoria before moving to Melbourne to pursue an interest in music and audio. A career as musician led to the professional pursuit of audio engineering & music production. In 2014, Neil began furniture making lessons with esteemed Victorian instructor Phoebe Everill. Recognising a new chapter in his creative life, Neil began taking furniture commissions in 2018. Beginning January 2025, Neil is slowing his production of commission-based work. Enquiries are still welcome for limited build opportunities going forward.
About the process
Initial conversations involve talking through your hopes and expectations for a piece, after which a pricing estimate for the work will be supplied. If you decide to move forward, Neil will then provide drawings of the design for sign-off and a time-line for completion. To speak with Neil about your furniture ideas contact
